Why heat protectant matters
A blow-dry, a wave, a smooth finish - none of it is off limits. Heat becomes a problem when it lands directly on bare hair, day after day, at a temperature the hair was never built to take. Every strand holds a little water, and a protein structure that behaves beautifully until it is pushed too far. Heat drives that water out fast, lifts the cuticle that was protecting the inside, and leaves the hair rougher, drier and quicker to break the next time.
A heat protectant sits between the tool and the hair and changes how that energy arrives - slowing the transfer, holding moisture in and smoothing the surface so the heat spreads evenly instead of scorching one spot. It is the cheapest insurance in your routine, and the only step in heat styling that is genuinely non-negotiable.
The science
Heat damage is not one event. It is five things happening at once inside the strand, and every one of them is easier to prevent than to repair.
Hair always carries moisture, held in tiny cavities along the shaft. Push it too hot too fast and that water flashes to steam and forces its way out, leaving hollow, weakened sections behind. It is the single fastest way to damage a strand, and it cannot be reversed.
The outer scales lie flat when hair is healthy, sealing moisture in and light out. Direct heat lifts them. Once raised, hair loses water faster, catches on itself, tangles, frizzes and reads dull instead of glossy - and the damage compounds with every pass.
Hair is built from keratin, a protein that holds its structure only within a certain range. Take it high enough and that protein begins to unravel and will not return to what it was. This is why heat-damaged hair feels rough and lifeless no matter how much conditioner it is given.
Styling works by breaking weak hydrogen bonds, which reform as hair cools - that is a temporary change and completely normal. The stronger disulphide bonds that give hair its strength are a different matter. Push past their limit and they break permanently. Damage stops being styling and becomes structural.
A lifted cuticle lets colour molecules escape and scatters light instead of reflecting it. Colour-treated and lightened hair is already more porous, so it takes heat harder and shows the cost sooner - fading faster, dulling quicker and turning warm before its time.
The routine
Protection is a sequence, not a single spray. Here is what to do, and exactly when to do it.
Protection starts before the dryer is switched on. Cleanse and condition for the condition your hair is actually in - repair and moisture if it has been styled hard, smoothing if it frizzes. Hair that is hydrated and sealed takes heat far better than hair that is already dry and porous.
Towel-dry until hair is damp, not dripping, then work your heat protectant through from mid-lengths to ends and back up. Damp hair distributes product evenly; soaking wet hair dilutes it and adds drying time. Comb through so every section is covered - the parts you miss are the parts that break.
Never take an iron or wand to hair that is still damp. Dry it completely first, then re-apply protection to dry hair before the tool touches it. Work in clean sections, keep the tool moving and use the lowest temperature that actually gives you the result - fine or lightened hair needs far less than most people use.
Regular heat styling asks for regular repair. A treatment or masque once a week restores strength and moisture, and a nourishing leave-in oil keeps ends supple between washes. Give yourself heat-free days where you can - air-dried hair is the best recovery there is.
Avoid these
The mistake
Clamping a hot plate onto damp hair traps water inside the strand and turns it to steam with nowhere to go. It hollows the shaft out from within, and no treatment brings that back. The sizzle you hear is not the style setting - it is damage.
Instead dry hair completely before any iron, wand or straightener touches it. If you can hear it sizzle, it is too wet.
The mistake
Plenty of leave-ins, oils and smoothing creams offer no thermal protection at all, and plenty of others are rated for a warm blow-dry rather than a 220°C iron. Reaching for the wrong one leaves you styling on bare hair while believing you are covered.
Instead check the stated temperature on the bottle and match it to the tool you actually use. If there is no number, treat it as no protection.
The mistake
Spraying over the surface coats the hair you can see and misses everything underneath - which is exactly where the brush and the plates spend most of their time. The under-layers take the heat unprotected and break first.
Instead section the hair, apply through the mid-lengths and ends underneath as well as on top, and comb it through properly.
The mistake
Most tools run far hotter than most hair needs. Fine, lightened or already fragile hair reaches its limit long before the top setting, and every extra degree is damage you never needed to spend for a result you would have got anyway.
Instead start low and only go up if the style will not hold. Fewer, slower passes at a lower temperature beat repeated passes on high.
The detail everyone misses
Almost every leave-in on the shelf says it protects against heat. Very few say up to what. That number is the whole story, because the gap between products is enormous - a leave-in conditioner or treatment oil rated to 93°C is genuinely useful for a soft blow-dry, and completely outmatched by a straightener.
Hot tools are a different category of heat. Most irons and wands operate between 180°C and 230°C, which is well past the point where hair stops recovering. If that is what you use, you need a heat protectant built for it - HEATED.DEFENSE is rated to 232°C, and that is the tier that matters once plates are involved.

The two are not the same kind of heat, and they do not ask for the same protection. Knowing which one you are doing decides what goes on the hair first.

A heat protectant takes seconds to apply and is the only step that reduces the damage while it is happening rather than trying to repair it afterwards. If you use heat, use protection, every time.
Match it to your tool. A gentle blow-dry is well covered by a leave-in rated to 93°C, such as UN.TANGLED, LEAVE-IN.REPAIR or YOUNG.AGAIN. Straighteners, wands and curling irons commonly run between 180°C and 230°C, and for those you need a dedicated heat protectant like HEATED.DEFENSE, which protects up to 232°C.

Because the water inside the strand turns to steam. Hair holds moisture in small cavities along the shaft, and clamping a hot plate onto damp hair vaporises that water so quickly it forces its way out, leaving hollow, brittle sections behind. It is permanent - the only fix is to cut the affected hair off and let it grow. Always dry hair fully before ironing.
Partly. Protein and moisture treatments genuinely improve how damaged hair looks, feels and behaves, and reduce further breakage - but the bonds broken by high heat do not come back. Treat what you have with a repairing wash and a weekly masque, protect properly from now on, and let your stylist take off the ends that are past saving.
